Herbal Facial: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 72 Hours aftercare guide at Womb Alchemy Spa and Botanica in Gladstone

The most important rule after an Herbal Facial is simple: keep your skin calm and cool for the first 24 to 72 hours. I’ve had people tell me they loved how attentive and non-judgmental I am, and that they left with “great results, ” and a big part of protecting that glow is what you do once you’re back out in Gladstone’s real life, errands, traffic, and weather.

My Herbal Facial is 60 minutes of steam infused with herbs, plus exfoliation, hydration, and massage, and I always start with a consultation and a personalized skin analysis so we’re on the same page about your skin and your goals. The next step is you following a few key do’s and don’ts so you don’t accidentally irritate fresh, newly-cleansed skin.

The first 24 to 48 hours: keep heat, sweat, and makeup off your face

If you’re coming to me from Gladstone, Kansas City, North Kansas City, Riverside, Platte Woods, or Parkville, you usually want aftercare that’s low effort and doesn’t disrupt your evening plans. Good news, this is mostly about avoiding a few common triggers that can cause redness or stinging.

For 24 to 48 hours, I generally recommend: no intense exercise, no sauna or steam room, and keep showers lukewarm so you’re not driving heat into the skin.

Do this tonight

  • Cleanse gently with a mild cleanser and cool to lukewarm water. No scrubs or cleansing brushes.
  • Moisturize with something soothing and fragrance-light if you have it. Hydration is your friend right now.
  • If you’ll be outdoors, use a mineral sunscreen. Even short sun exposure can make fresh skin feel reactive.

Skip these for at least 24 hours

  • Makeup, especially heavier foundation. Freshly treated skin is more likely to get irritated and congested.
  • Hot baths, hot yoga, and long hot showers. If it makes you flush, it’s too much right now.
  • Pools, hot tubs, and chlorinated or saltwater for 48 hours. Those chemicals tend to sting after a facial.

And if you’re an after-work appointment person coming down North Oak Trafficway or off I-29, plan for a “quiet skin” night. Dinner, a show, time with family is fine. I just don’t want you sweating hard or layering a bunch of actives.

Days 3 to 7: the “no actives” window that keeps results looking clean

Most people want that refreshed, nourished look to last. The fastest way to throw your skin off is jumping right back into exfoliating acids and strong serums too soon. I’m big on getting you results without making your skin feel raw.

For 5 to 7 days: avoid retinol, AHA/BHA acids, exfoliating pads, peels, and “tingly” products. If it’s designed to speed up cell turnover, it usually needs to wait.

Don’t pick at dry patches or tiny flakes if you get them. That’s one of those habits that can turn a small thing into redness that lingers. Keep cleansing gentle, keep moisturizing, and keep sunscreen in the mix if you’re outside.

Gladstone’s four-season climate matters here. In summer, especially August, sweat and midday sun can bring irritation back fast. In winter, dry air tends to pull moisture out of the skin, so you’ll often do better with an extra layer of moisturizer at night.

Simple product types that pair well with an Herbal Facial (no complicated routine)

You don’t need a 10-step routine after seeing me at Womb Alchemy Spa and Botanica. You need a calm routine. Think: gentle cleanse, hydrate, protect.

Gentle cleanser

Look for “fragrance-free” or “sensitive skin” and skip gritty scrubs. Your cleanser should feel boring in the best way.

Soothing moisturizer

A basic moisturizer that supports your skin barrier usually works best for the first week. If you’re dry in winter, apply a little more at night.

Mineral SPF for daytime

If you’ll be outdoors, use mineral sunscreen and reapply if you’re out for a while. Fresh skin and sun are rarely a good mix.

If you’re unsure about a product you already own, bring it up at your appointment. I’m happy to look at what you’re using and tell you what to pause for the week.

When I want you to reach out, and how I help you decide what’s “normal”

A little redness or sensitivity can happen after a facial, especially if your skin is already reactive. It often settles down within a day or two when you keep heat, sweat, and actives out of the picture.

“Loved my service! Amazing customer service Very professional & informative. Will be back again!”

one of our regulars

I want you to message or call if redness, swelling, or irritation is getting worse instead of better, or if it hangs on past a few days. Tell me what you’re feeling and what you’ve put on your skin since your appointment, and I’ll help you simplify things so your skin can settle.

If you’re planning your next step: a lot of people like to book their next Herbal Facial before they leave, especially if they’re already running errands along the North Oak Trafficway commercial corridor near downtown Gladstone and want something easy to keep up with.

Want the why behind the rules? Two quick reads to pair with aftercare

If you like knowing what’s happening with your skin (and why I’m so serious about heat and actives), these two posts are a good next step.

And if you’re already on the schedule, arrive with a clean face, avoid heavy makeup, and tell me what’s going on with your skin that week. That little check-in helps me make your session feel good and keep your aftercare simple.

Mild redness or sensitivity often settles within 24 to 48 hours when you keep your skin cool and avoid heat, sweat, makeup, and active products. If it’s getting worse instead of better, or if it lasts beyond a few days, reach out to me so I can help you figure out what’s triggering it.

I recommend skipping makeup for at least 24 hours. Freshly treated skin can be more reactive and easier to congest, so giving it a day helps protect your results.

Light movement is usually fine, but I recommend avoiding intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Heavy sweating and overheating can bring redness back and irritate the skin.

Keep showers lukewarm for the first 24 to 72 hours and skip hot baths, saunas, and steam during that window. Avoid pools and hot tubs for about 48 hours because chlorine, salt, and heat can sting and irritate freshly treated skin.

For about 5 to 7 days, avoid exfoliating scrubs, retinol, AHA/BHA acids, exfoliating pads, peels, and strong or “tingly” serums. Stick with a gentle cleanser, a soothing moisturizer, and mineral sunscreen when you’re outdoors.
